Public Collection Acquisition & Exhibition: Portland Art Museum (USA)

I am deeply honored to announce that my ceramic work, Sake cup (2021), has been acquired by the Portland Art Museum (Portland, Oregon, USA) for its permanent collection.

The work was generously gifted to the museum in 2025 by collectors Richard W. Anderson and Adria F. Fulkerson, who acquired it in 2022.

Furthermore, the piece is currently featured in the museum’s exhibition Conversations in Clay, curated by Dr. Jeannie Kenmotsu (Curator of Asian Art). I am immensely grateful to the donors, the curatorial team, and the museum for including my work in their distinguished collection and presenting it to international audiences.

【収蔵・展示のお知らせ】ポートランド美術館（米国）パーマネントコレクション収蔵

このたび、2021年に制作いたしました作品『Sake cup』が、米国オレゴン州のポートランド美術館（Portland Art Museum）のパーマネントコレクション（永久収蔵品）として収蔵されました。

本作は、2022年より所蔵されていたコレクターの Richard W. Anderson 氏および Adria F. Fulkerson 氏のご厚意により、2025年に同美術館へ寄贈されたものです。

また、同館のアジア美術部門キュレーターである Jeannie Kenmotsu 氏の企画による展覧会『Conversations in Clay』において、作品が展示・公開されています。

作品を大切にしてくださり美術館へと繋いでくださったコレクターのお二人、ならびにキュレーターをはじめとするポートランド美術館の関係者の皆様に心より感謝申し上げます。

2026年9月3日（木）より、京都の桃青京都ギャラリーにて開催されるグループ展、オブジェ展「深化するカタチ – Contemporary Japanese Objects –」に出品いたします。

本展は二期に分かれて開催され、私は前期の「モノクローム編」（9月3日〜9月12日）に参加いたします。本展覧会の案内状（DM）および公式Webサイトのメインビジュアルとして、今回の出品作品『脈動』を掲載していただいています。

Group Exhibition: Deepening Forms – Contemporary Japanese Objects – at Tosei Kyoto Gallery

I am pleased to announce that my ceramic sculpture will be featured in the upcoming exhibition Deepening Forms – Contemporary Japanese Objects – at Tosei Kyoto Gallery (桃青京都ギャラリー) in Kyoto, Japan.

I will be participating in Part 1, the “Monochrome” edition (September 3 – September 12, 2026). I am also deeply honored that my featured sculpture, Silent Pulse (脈動), has been selected as the main visual for the official exhibition invitation card (DM) and gallery announcement.

The “Monochrome” edition focuses on the interplay of tactile texture, shadow, and the raw presence of materials that emerge when color is restrained. I would be delighted if you could visit the gallery to experience the dynamic, spiraling layers and organic vitality of the work in person.

Featured on the Catalog Cover: Tōgei: Contemporary Japanese Ceramics at AMOCA

I am deeply honored to share that my sculpture, Wisp (2015), is featured on the catalog cover and key visual for the major exhibition Tōgei: Contemporary Japanese Ceramics at the American Museum of Ceramic Art (AMOCA) in Pomona, California.

Guest curated by Hollis Goodall (former Curator of Japanese Art at LACMA for over 40 years), the exhibition traces the evolution of Japanese ceramic traditions from functional wares to modern sculptural expressions. Displaying works alongside historical masters such as Shōji Hamada, Kazuo Yagi, and Gorō Suzuki, the exhibition presents a comprehensive snapshot of modern Japanese ceramic practice drawn from prominent public and private collections across Southern California.

Seeing Wisp selected as the main visual for this historic exhibition is a profound honor in my artistic career. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to curator Hollis Goodall, Executive Director Beth Ann Gerstein, and the wonderful team at AMOCA for their warmth and dedication.

米国陶芸美術館（AMOCA）企画展「Tōgei」図録表紙および出品のお知らせ

米国カリフォルニア州ポモナのアメリカ陶芸美術館（AMOCA: American Museum of Ceramic Art）にて開催中の企画展『Tōgei: Contemporary Japanese Ceramics』（会期：2026年6月13日〜2027年1月3日）において、作品『Wisp』（2015年）が展覧会の公式図録の表紙およびメインビジュアルに選出され、会場にて展示されています。

本展は、ロサンゼルス・カウンティ美術館（LACMA）で長年日本美術部門を率いてこられたホリス・グッダール氏による企画です。濱田庄司氏や八木一夫氏、鈴木五郎氏といった日本陶芸界の巨匠から現代作家に至るまで、南カリフォルニアの公私コレクションを通じて近代・現代日本の陶芸の変遷を一望する大規模な展覧会となっています。

南カリフォルニアの地で大切に所蔵されていた作品が、このような節目の展覧会で「顔」として選ばれ、多くの方々の目に触れていることを大変光栄に思います。素晴らしい展覧会を企画されたホリス・グッダール氏、温かいサポートをいただいた館長のベス・アン・ガースタイン氏をはじめとするAMOCAチームの皆様に心より感謝申し上げます。

香港でのRachel Cheungさんとの2人展は2月11日に終了しました。大館という元は警察・監獄の施設だったものをリノベーションして新たなアートスポットになっている施設内にあるContemporary Crafts Centreでの展示でした。まだ新しい施設で、香港の刑事・司法施設の歴史を伝える展示の他にレストランやカフェ、美術館もあり大変賑わっていました。ギャラリーもとてもきれいで素敵な空間です。オーナーのSusannaさんは親切で素敵な方でした。

今回はRachelさんの工房を見学させていただきました。彼女の工房はJCCACという大きなビルの中にあります。ここは大きなビル全体が貸し工房になっており、陶芸、ガラス、木工、絵画、デザイン、漆、生け花など様々なジャンルのアーティストがそれぞれの部屋をレンタルして制作したり教室を開いたりしているようです。昔は綿産業、印刷業などの小さな会社や工場がたくさん入っているビルだったのが、時代の流れとともにそのような産業が衰退して会社が無くなったところをアーティストのための施設に転用したようです。香港は家が狭いので、多くの人がこのように工房を借りていると聞きました。Rachelさんは１つの部屋を更に3人でシェアして使っているようでした。もう一部屋別に借りていて、そちらでは陶芸教室をしているそうです。

香港の人たちは控えめな雰囲気もありつつ親しみやすく、オープニングではなぜこの釉薬を選んだのか、金彩にはどのような意味があるかなど熱心に質問してくれました。こちらのギャラリーが漆や陶芸などの現代工芸の作品を専門に扱っているということとRachelさんの陶芸教室の生徒さんがたくさん来てくださっていたからだと思います。

ちなみに香港といえば飲茶・中国茶というイメージがありおいしい中国茶を楽しみにしていたのですが、実際は香港の若い人はコーヒーを飲むことが多いのだそうです。食にはうるさいけれどお茶に対してはそこまでの熱量は無いようだとも聞きました。中国茶カフェのようなお店ではそれなりに若い人も見かけたけれど他の国からの観光客だったのかもしれない。香港ではお茶といえばプーアールや鉄観音を飲むことが多いということで、本格的な中国茶専門店でプーアールと鉄観音を飲みました。私のように香港で中国茶を飲みたがる日本人が多いのか、日本語が話せる店員さんが2人もいてびっくりした。

A Duo Exhibition and Studio Visit in Hong Kong

My Duo exhibition with Hong Kong-based ceramic artist Rachel Cheung concluded on February 11 at the Contemporary Crafts Centre, located in Tai Kwun—a historic police compound beautifully renovated into a modern art space.

During my stay, I had the pleasure of visiting Rachel’s studio at JCCAC, a vibrant artistic hub created by repurposing a former factory building. It was fascinating to see how artists in Hong Kong share and utilize creative spaces, and we had a wonderful time exchanging ideas about our practices.

At the opening reception, many visitors and Rachel’s students warmly welcomed us. They asked thoughtful questions about my choice of glazes and the meaning behind my use of gold luster (kinsai).
