フィラデルフィアの Moderne Gallery での個展が、5月9日に無事オープニングを迎えることができました。私は５月の６日から６日間フィラデルフィアに滞在し、その他にもワシントンDC、ニューヨーク、ボストンを訪れました。
ギャラリーは、以前の場所から今年2月に移転したばかりで、とても新しく美しい空間です。中心部からは少し離れた、かつては倉庫街だったエリアにあり、最近では多くのギャラリーが移転してきて、まるでSOHOのような雰囲気になりつつあると聞きました。Moderne Gallery も、元は倉庫だった建物を改装しており、非常に広々としています。
実は、私はもともとこのギャラリーのことをよく知っていたわけではなく、しかも陶芸専門のギャラリーでもなかったため、正直なところ、どんな人たちが運営しているのか、どのような雰囲気の場所なのかについては、インターネットの情報以外には、「良いギャラリーだよ」という他の人の言葉を信じるしかありませんでした。
そんな中、一抹の不安を抱えながら渡米し、初めてギャラリーの方々とお会いしたとき、「ここで個展ができて本当によかった」と心から思いました。展示されている家具作品を見ながらギャラリーの説明を受ける中で、彼らが工房でアーティストが一つひとつ手作りした作品を、単なる家具や装飾品ではなく、アート作品として深い敬意をもって接していることがはっきりと伝わってきました。
これまで私の作品を見た方からは、「鳥のよう」「貝のよう」「花のようで美しい」といった感想をいただくことが多かったのですが、今回のオープニングでは、そういった類のコメントはほとんどなく、代わりに話をしたほぼすべての方から「あなたの作品からはとても動きを感じる」「エネルギーを感じる」「生きているようだ」といった言葉をいただきました。それが何よりも嬉しく、強く印象に残っています。
ギャラリーの人達やお客様と直接お会いできたことやギャラリーの空間や街の様子を肌で感じることができたことに加え、現地に実際に行かなければ分からなかったことや感じることができなかったことがたくさんありました。インターネットで何でも見て知ることができるようで、やはり自分で足を運び本物に触れなければ分からないことがたくさんあると改めて気付かされた、自分にとっての人生の財産になるような旅でした。
Solo Exhibition: It may be too personal at Moderne Gallery in Philadelphia
My solo exhibition, titled It may be too personal, took place at Moderne Gallery in Philadelphia from May 9 through August 2025. The title was thoughtfully given by the gallery—a title I deeply love and resonate with.
During my stay in the US for the opening, I spent six days in Philadelphia and also visited Washington, D.C., New York, and Boston.
The gallery had recently relocated to a newly renovated, spacious former warehouse—an emerging arts district with an atmosphere reminiscent of New York’s SoHo. Walking through the space, I was deeply moved by the gallery team’s profound respect for craftsmanship, treating hand-crafted works not merely as furniture or decorative items, but as fine art.
While visitors in the past often described my work as resembling birds, shells, or flowers, the response at this opening was noticeably different. Almost everyone I spoke with shared comments such as, “I feel so much movement in your work,” “There is incredible energy,” or “It feels alive.” Hearing these reactions in person was truly encouraging and memorable.
Experiencing the gallery space, meeting the team and visitors directly, and sensing the atmosphere of the city offered insights that could never be gained through a screen. This journey reminded me of the irreplaceable value of being present in person, making it a truly priceless experience for my life and artistic practice.
